Avoid a Halloween Plumbing Nightmare and Protect Your Pipes from Freezing!
Posted October 27, 2026
Halloween is full of tricks, treats and pumpkin-carving fun, but a plumbing nightmare is one fright you can do without! Pumpkin pulp and seeds may seem harmless, but they can stick to the inside of your pipes and contribute to stubborn clogs, costly repairs and unnecessary water waste.
Keep Pumpkin Guts Out of Your Pipes
Follow these simple tips to keep your Halloween fun from turning into a plumbing horror story:
- Skip the sink. Never put pumpkin pulp or seeds down your drain or toilet.
- Carve smart. Use newspaper or garbage bags to make cleanup easier. Scoop pumpkin guts into a bowl to separate the seeds for roasting or cooking.
- Clean up carefully. Wipe pumpkin residue from your hands with a paper towel or rinse them outdoors before washing in the sink.
- Toss or compost them. Put pumpkins in the garbage or compost, or bury them in your garden to add nutrients to the soil.
Don't Let Freezing Temperatures Haunt Your Plumbing
As temperatures drop, a little preparation can help prevent frozen pipes, water damage and costly repairs. Take these steps to get your home ready for winter:
- Winterize your irrigation system. Turn off your system and drain or blow out the water lines. Disconnect garden hoses from outdoor spigots.
- Check for vulnerable pipes. Inspect crawl spaces, basements, garages and exterior walls for exposed pipes that may be susceptible to freezing.
- Know where to shut off your water. Make sure everyone in your household knows the location of the main water shut-off valve and curb stop valve.
- Seal and insulate. Insulate exposed pipes and seal cracks or gaps where cold air can enter. Keep your thermostat set to at least 55°F when you're away from home.
A few simple precautions can help keep your pipes clog-free and protected from the cold. Have a safe, happy Halloween—and don't let plumbing problems turn your spooky season into a real-life horror story!
